piKzil is a promising new duo, that are the brainchild of musicians Liza Oxnard and Kip Kuepper. Music collaborators for a number of years, the group are now unleashing their efforts with their debut EP as piKzil on September 16th.
Recently sharing their newest single, “Brand New Soul,” the piece comes from a very personal place for Oxnard, as she channels a significant moment in her life. Together their harmonious sound brings electronic elements that combine a dose of Jazz, creating a sound that is both elegant and unique. We had the honor of catching up with piKzil, for an exclusive Indie 5-0.
There are a ton of different genres involved in your music, everything from jazz to electro-lounge seems to have its place. How did you initially find the blended sound that you wanted to go towards with piKzil?
I was very inspired by the Verve Remixed compilation albums throughout the 2000’s as well as bands like Zero 7, Thievery Corporation, Portishead, and Bitter:Sweet. The music appealed to me because it was deeply funky and almost tribal at times but also melodic and elegant. I have such varied tastes in music and I loved the idea of bridging all of my influences (Rock, Pop, Funk, Jazz, Brazilian Jazz) and musical experience into one project.
